The New Porch Building

Building the new Porch!

Our existing Porch building in Magdalen Road is ageing and not capable of meeting the increasing demand for our services.

We have been desperately in need of a larger space where we can provide an extended range of wheelchair accessible services. In January 2020, the Porch was able to purchase a former church just 100 yards away – a much larger building which will allow us to support more homeless and vulnerably housed people and to expand our range of support. The extra space will also mean we can support Oxford city to provide more safe sleeping spaces at the harshest times of the year.

Although we’ve increased our delivery of meals, Covid means we can’t provide any showers or our laundry service from our old building.

The new building is urgently needed and Covid and its longer term impact has made it even more relevant right now!

Purpose-built facility

We consulted the staff team and the members to help design a purpose-built facility that will become a vibrant community hub.

Wider range of services

The new Porch building will let us support more people with a wider range of services.

Safe & accessible

All services will be safer and less crowded for our members and our team and all will be wheelchair accessible.

Our new building will offer …

  • Café & dining area
  • Wheelchair accessible toilets & showers
  • Laundry facilities
  • Clothing store
  • Fully equipped training kitchen & kitchen store
  • Quiet room, treatment room & women’s only area
  • Confidential assessment room
  • Two fully-equipped activity rooms
  • Computer training room
  • Conference & training room
  • Resource library

Our new building and Covid

While we raise the remaining funds to complete the full refurbishment and move from our old premises, we have temporarily converted the new building so we can provide meals and showers to a key target group of rough sleeping members indoors (all other members will be served at the door to ensure social distancing). The second national lockdown of 5th November 2020 means this extra service was even more relevant.

So we have expanded our service from lunch only to lunch and dinner provision.

The Fundraising Challenge

We now need to raise funds to complete the building’s refurbishment as a vibrant community hub offering a much wider range of fully accessible services.

We have selected the best value for money plan for this refurbishment and we thank all the individuals and groups that have already donated to us.

But because we’ve been asked to expand our service through the pandemic, we’ve had to concentrate on raising funds to cover extra everyday running costs.

Although the pandemic makes the future uncertain… this new space will be safer for our team and our members.

The pandemic means that most large funders have put on hold support to projects such as ours but we believe strongly that the new building does address Covid and its fallout, so we are launching a local campaign to raise funds to get us working in the building as soon as possible!

What you can do

Our first target is to raise the £22,500 required to complete the new kitchen and laundry area at the building. We’ve already gratefully received seating and catering kitchenware that will finish these areas but we need to get the conversion work underway.

If we can achieve this, your support will help leverage any additional funding from grant-giving bodies and help us finish our refurbishment as quickly as possible.

If we are fortunate enough to go further, any additional funds will be allocated to the purchase and installation of a platform lift (£18,500) – this will be the key stage in making all our new services fully wheelchair accessible.

All under one roof!

By donating you will be helping us set up our new Porch building as a vibrant local hub in 2021, providing:
Lunch and evening meals, showers, laundry, advice, support, counselling and training …uniquely all under one roof!
